Demolition

We live in a pretty small town, of about 30,000, so it comes as no surprise that our tallest building is a dorm at the university that stands at 13 stories. Pretty tall for this area.
Unfortunately, the poor old building, built in 1969, is contaminated with asbestos. They determined that it would not be worth the cost of repairing it, so it is now being demolished.

I assumed a building of this size would be imploded, but they seem to be going about it a different way.

Notice anything different?

We got an eerie feeling rounding the corner and seeing this. It's strange seeing such a large structure in this condition when you've seen it another way you're entire life. It also made me think of Haiti and other natural disasters and warring nations where things like this happen without control. It must be a horrific sight in those areas.

Here's a few more pics:

Crazy huh!? On a brighter note, they will be replacing it with a shiney new dorm; much bigger and better, I would assume.

I'm guessing they didn't want asbestos floating around town if they used explosives? Maybe the next building will be extra groovy-looking. :)

Yeah that's a good point. I don't know why but I love new construction projects. I hope it's at least as tall as this one was!

A wrecking ball??!! They actually still do that? That seems like it would also spread asbestos.
